Invalid IP Configuration Error

We want to keep you updated on the Invalid IP Configuration Error issue that is impacting Microsoft users, and leading to increased call volumes up to 35%-40% for some partners. To recap, a large number of Microsoft Windows 8 and 10 users were having issues connecting to the Internet and were receiving the error “Invalid IP Configuration”.

As of mid-day yesterday, Microsoft released an update (KB3206632) that we believe addresses this issue. A bullet point in the update log states: “Addressed a service crash in CDPSVC that in some situations could lead to the machine not being able to acquire an IP address.”

We continue to see elevated call volume for a few reasons:

  1. Customers who have no Internet will not be able to get the update until their Internet is fixed.
  2. Customers may have disabled their own Windows Updates from applying on their own preferring a manual approach.
  3. Customers may just ignore update prompts from Microsoft.

Recommendation:

If you have customers experiencing issues connecting to the internet we recommend you have them restart their computer. Go to Start, click the Power button and choose Restart (not Shut Down). Once Internet is restored run Windows Updates. This way the update can be applied and they won’t have this issue again.

We hope that this will be the final update on the 169.254.X.X IP Configuration issue but we will continue to watch for it and keep you updated if we see any changes.
